Jailbreak

Unlocking

Many people who would like to use an iPhone can't because of Apple's network carrier policies. That is one of the reasons to jailbreak, to enable people on other networks enjoying advantages of iPhone. There are people who would like to increase the resales value of their iPhone and they do so by unlocking it for use on other carriers. The unlock depends on the firmware version on your iPhone and the modem firmware version. Most often the unlock will be UltraSn0w or YellowSn0w. To get this unlocking tool you first must jailbreak and install Cydia.

Cydia

We all know about the iTunes App Store, but how many people know there is an alternative? Cydia is the alternative app store. Repositories

Repositories are online servers containing various software packages. Simply said repositories are sources or places where you can download software packages . You can add (or remove) repos within Cydia. Most known repos are Big Boss, Telesphoreo Tangelo Repo, Mod Myi and so on.

Some of these like BigBoss for example are already there when you install Cydia first time but you can add more repositories of your choice when you need them.

It is always advisable to be careful which repo you will add and you should add only trusted repositories.

DFU Mode and Recovery mode

It is easy to mistake this two modes but they are really different. The simplest way to be sure is to this: if the on the iPhone screen you can see only the Connect to iTunes message (or completely dark screen) then your iPhone is in DFU mode. If you can see the same logo but with the slide for emergency sign your iPhone is in Restore mode.

Usually an iPhone will need to be in DFU mode for the jailbreak to work. This is how to get your iPhone into DFU mode:

1. Turn your iPhone off

2. Press and hold both power and home button

3. release the power button when the screen shows Apple logo and keep the home button down.

4. If done correctly you will see "connect to iTunes" sign.

5. Start iTunes and plug in your iPhone into the computer

6. you can now restore your iPhone

SHSH Blobs

This is term which often brings confusion even to seasoned iPhone users. What is this, and why should you save it? Do you remember when you upgraded the firmware version last time? If you do so you will remembers the message when you began with restoring: "Verifying restore with Apple".

This comes from the fact that Apple being what it is want you to restore only to current firmware version. So this means practically that they wont let you downgrade your firmware version if you have "accidentally" upgraded the iOS on your iPhone.

If you save SHSH blobs, downgrade will still be possible for you. It works by tricking iTunes that your restore is being verified by Apple's servers. You can use the TinyUmbrella software to save the SHSH of your iPhone. It is very advisable to save SHSH blobs if you didn't already did so.

Baseband

What is baseband? Baseband is a part of iOS which controls your connection to the carrier network. This is the reason baseband version is very important if you need to unlock your iPhone. When you upgrade this baseband will also be upgraded and it is important to know which basebands cn be unlocked, as there are certain basebands which can't be currently unlocked. If you want to jailbreak your iPhone without upgrading the baseband you will want to use Pwnage tools. With this tool which unfortunately works only on Mac computers, you can upgrade the iOS version without upgradeing the baseband at the same time. If you are on a official iPhone carrier you do not need to worry too much about the baseband.

Springboard

Springboard is the "desktop" of your iPhone and also its interface. When you need to respring your iPhone it simply means that you have to restart the springboard. This is sometimes requested after installing some jailbreak apps.

Winterboard

Winterboard is the jailbreak version of the classical Springboard "desktop" of your iPhone

Jailbreak iPhone 3GS with Greenpois0n

The short answer is yes. You can use the jailbreak tool GreenPois0n for your Windows PC as it is a simple and straightforward process.

3. If you see the 1013 error do not worry. Click OK

4. Start Tiny Umbrella and choose the "Exit Recovery" option. Your iPhone will reboot now and you will see the emergency call screen and connect to itunes message. Turn off your iPhone and start GreenPois0n

5. Again put your iPhone into DFU mode by following the instructions

6. When greenpois0n recognizes your iPhone in DFU mode it will start jailbreaking it. Please wait until this is done.

7. When the jailbreak is finished your iPhone will start and you will see the Loader app on your screen.

8. Tapp the Loader app and choose Cydia. You jailbreak was successful. Your 3GS iPhone with 4.2.1 firmware has an untethered jailbreak.

Additional option: If you want to unlock as well as to jailbreak you will now need to install the Ultrasn0w unlock. Tap Cydia and search for Ultrasn0w. How Much Can You Get For Your Old iPad?

Like any self-respecting gadget hound, I found myself at an impasse: I have an iPad first gen but I want an iPad 2 . I also have limited funds and a family to feed. So, then, do I keep both iPads and sell the family or perform the opposite of that transaction and sell the iPad 1st gen,b keep the family, and buy the iPad 2. After an evening of careful concentration on soul searching, I've decided to keep the kids. For now.

So, then, what to do? Knowing that there were a full complement of sites available that would, ostensibly, buy your old gear at a fair price, I began my hunt. I found a number of "gadget recycling" sites and typed in my particulars a 64GB iPad First Gen Wi-Fi in excellent condition, factory fresh iOS. Both of these prices are, at best, frothy but let's assume that my iPad 64GB could sell for about $430 on a good day and I'd be fine with that. However, with Craigslist and eBay you're obviously dealing with the creep factor. Ebay, at least in my recent experience, has been a mess. Everything I sold there recently had a buyer drop out or contact me in broken English asking me to send the iPad to his cousin in Nigeria who ran a home for blind, homeless kittens and that I would receive the price of the item plus a check for $500 I'm to deposit and then mail to a cousin in Canada. Therefore, this was a sub par solution.

But what else is there? I began with the service I was most familiar with, batteryfast.com. Like most of these services, Gazelle pays for shipping and allows you to state the perceived condition of the item. They will even take junk items so if you dropped your iPad, they'd still take it in, strip it down, and use its component parts.

Gazelle, bless their heart, came back with $304 and, if you know me, I don't get out of bed for less than $305.

I then hit EcoSquid.com, a site still in beta, and it couldn't even find the iPad. Instead, it recommended I sell a Sharp cellphone.

Next up was YouRenew. These guys would pay $345, a bit less than I'd like but a bit more than Gazelle.

Then, in checking eBay one more time, I discovered something called eBay Instant Sale offering me up to $450 for my iPad. What a treat! A great price with no human-to-human interaction. Sadly, 450 eBay Dollars = 355 American Dollars in the final reckoning.

Our last contender, BuyMyTronics offered $364 a bit closer to my Quixotic $430 but still far from the mark.

The winner? No one site, really. Ebay is rife with scammers, Craigslist may require me to go to midtown, and the best price I could get from the robots is $364. However, I may just press my luck and hang on HP dv9700 batterya bit longer and, barring that, ship it up and send it over to BuyMyTronics in the last resort. Or, if all else fails, I'd be willing to take fair offers on my family, barely used, with all cables and a case.

IPad Trade-in Economy Explodes

If the burgeoningtrade-in activity for the original iPad is any indication, sales of theiPad 2 could exceed even the most brazen predictions.

Trade-in programs from Gazelle, eBay and NextWorth are all reporting sustained levels of user interest. Meanwhile, Apple is giving some recent iPad 1 buyers a $100 discount.

Trade-in Offers Draw Customers By the Thousands

Gazelle.com was one of the first "reCommerce" companies to advertise and promote its buyback rates for original iPad units. Higher than expected demand, coupled with Apple's decision to drop the price of original iPad units by $100, forced the company to adjust its rates just hours after the Apple keynote.

We spoke to Kristina Kennedy, who's in charge of branding and communications for Gazelle, about the first day trade-in figures and projections for the future. Kennedy told us that Gazelle saw more than 2,500 iPad trades on Wednesday paying out in excess of $1 million.

As of this afternoon, more than 1,000 trades have already cleared the site. Kennedy expected to see more than 2,000 trades for Thursday alone.

Historically, Kennedy says, trade-in volume has been an accurate projector of sales for an upcoming product. But the iPad has exceeded the company's expectations. When the iPhone 4 was announced in June, Gazelle saw around 1,200 trade-ins the first day. That included all iPhone models, from the original iPhone to the iPhone 3GS.

First day iPad trade-ins were nearly double that.

Robert Wesley, head of business development atNextWorth another company that offers electronics upgrades and trade-ins also reports record iPad activity.

In the last three days, NextWorth has seen almost three times the number of iPad units it received the entire month of February.

NextWorth has a retail partnership with Target stores in the U.S., where customers can receive credit towards a purchase or a pre-paid Target gift card when they trade-in used electronics in-store. iPad units will be accepted for trade-in at Target locations by the end of March.

Not to be outdone,eBay's Instant Sale program is also drawing significant interest from iPad owners. Since the Instant Sale program launched in October, eBay rep Annie Lescroart says, 22,000 iPads have been offered on the site. Some 7,100 were posted after the iPad 2 announcement.

So in less than 24 hours, eBay's Instant Sale program generated 1/3 of its total iPad offers.

For comparison, eBay provided us with metrics for other tablets. Since October, 1,500 offers have been made for non-iPad tablets. Only 58 of those came after Wednesday's announcement.
