Free Apple iPads? Really?

Unless you live under a rock, you have probably heard of the iPad, the latest product from Apple, makers of the iPhone, iPod, MacBook and Macintosh computers. Apple keeps coming up with hit after hit in the personal electronics and computing sector, and the iPad is just their latest success. Perhaps you've read about a select few official iPad testers, who are entrusted with rating the user experience, and are then permitted to hold on to their iPads. That sounds like a free iPad to me!

No, that's not a sugar-free iPad or a fat-free iPad; it's just a plain free iPad. Everyone wants to be an iPad tester, but how could you make it happen? If it did happen, I can't imagine the testing responsibilities would be very onerous. Where are these privileged Apple iPad testers?

I can't say, and I'm not sure who could. Apple has no reason to give them away, so far. Another PR nightmare like the iPhone antenna malfunction may force them to spend a lot more on iPa d user tests. Nevertheless, when some folks are happy to shell out $500 for a brand new iPad on day one, just to smash it on youtube, Apple has little incentive to give iPads away.

So what should you do when you find a website that purports to offer free iPads? You could just follow the links and see where they lead, but unless you're browsing with a Mac, you might not want to do that. Since these kinds of offers may be too good to be true, beware of viruses and other malware.

It's just good practice to check that URL with a security website to see if malware has been see there. If there is no malware there, what's the harm in checking it out and trying to become one of the Apple iPad testers? You may save yourself five hundred or a thousand dollars, right? What's the worst possible outcome, you take five minutes to sign up, but nothing happens? During these hard times, that's not a terrible wager for lots of folks.

The reward could be getting a shiny free iPad. Is it that implausible that Apple would spend twenty thousand dollars or so on more user testing? That doesn't sound too implausible. Please, just try not to fill up your C drive with spyware and trojan horses while trying to find out.
